About Downtown Baltimore

The heart of Baltimore is a busy area, the government and financial district. Four neighborhoods are part of Baltimore's downtown, City Centre, Camden Yards, Inner Harbor and Westside. Besides the government and historic buildings, this district has apartment buildings and condominiums where people are in residence. Continued development is part of the overall plan for downtown Baltimore. Here are some of the main features and sights in and around the city's heart today:

Top of the World Observation Level
On the 27th floor of Baltimore's World Trade Center, an observation deck is a great place to start a tour of Downtown Baltimore. From this vantage point people can see the Inner Harbor as well as the rest of the downtown area.

City Hall
Built in beautiful Baroque Revival architectural style after the Civil War, City Hall is the home of the city government. Still, a large portion of the building is open to the public for free touring. The exterior and interior architecture is captivating, and indoor displays show city history and samples of local visual arts.

Hippodrome Theatre
A large venue for the performance arts, this theatre was formerly a home for vaudeville and early movie shows. Now, Broadway shows and other performances take place in this exquisite building. The Hippodrome is a Baltimore must-see.

Inner Harbor
This waterfront area offers attractions like fascinating vintage military watercraft, resort hotels, the National Aquarium and much more. Inner Harbor is a pleasant place for an afternoon stroll. The area has restaurants for relaxing meals and snacks with harbor views.

Westminster Hall and Burying Ground
In this cemetery, many Baltimore citizens are entombed along with the famous poet, Edgar Allen Poe. The custom is to leave a penny on his grave. These pennies are collected for grave site upkeep. In 1786 when the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church purchased the property, the land was just outside of the town. Whenever the burying ground is open, the place is free to tour.
