About Downtown Manhattan

In downtown Manhattan, the city that never sleeps, there is always things to see and things to do. Several historically famous sites are located in this district, as well as prime shopping and New York's financial district.

Home to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, downtown Manhattan is brimming with New York history. Any visit to the Big Apple would not be complete without viewing the iconic Statue of Liberty. The wait to see the statue can sometimes be quite extensive, but a great alternative to an official tour is taking the Staten Island Ferry. Not only is it free and running twenty four hours a day, spectacular views of Lady Liberty can be seen along the ferry's route. Ellis Island, home to the American Family Immigration History Center, is where over twelve million immigrants aboard steamships passed through when making their way into America. It is said over forty percent of the American population can trace their ancestry back to Ellis Island.

Spanning the East River, and connecting Manhattan to the borough of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge is an integral part of New York. Made famous by many movies, the bridge has a separated lane for foot and bicycle traffic.

Also found in downtown Manhattan, the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street is the hub of the city's financial district. Close in proximity, The National September 11th Memorial, at the former site of the World Trade Center, pays homage to the victims of the tragedy. St. Paul's Church, across the street, is infamous for coming out of the terror completely unscathed, feeding and sheltering rescue workers and volunteers during the days that followed. The church is filled with many pieces of memorabilia.

For shopping, Century 21 is the prime spot in downtown Manhattan. With designer labels discounted up to sixty five percent, the store is a haven for deal seekers. Century 21 has been keeping New York dressed to impress since 1961. Make sure to plan your trip to include ample time for soaking in all that downtown Manhattan has to offer.
